What made you decide you wanted to be a dentist: I feel like this is the number one question dental students get asked, and I feel like my answer has evolved since I began dental school. Initially I knew I wanted to do something involved with health care. I have an uncle who is a dentist and I look up to him a lot. Through his mentoring I decide I wanted to be a dentist mainly based on the strong interactions I can have with my patients and the flexibility of the job when it comes to having a family and providing for them. Of course I wanted to change peoples' lives and discovered how much a healthy smile can change their lives, but since I've began dental school I've been really attracted to the artistic aspect of dentistry as well as the problem solving aspect. I like how no case is the same and you have to think on you feet, presenting different treatment options to patients and figuring out which one is the best option. I love projects and each appointment is a project to me. I love pushing myself to improve the esthetics and overall quality of my work.
Hobbies: I love to read! I also know how binge watch a tv show on Netflix pretty well. I grew up playing a lot of sports so I love playing sports. Also, since I grew up in Utah I have skied since the age of 3 so I love to ski!
Favorite place to eat in SLC: It is always changing, and really changes depending on what food I'm feeling but one of my favorite restaurants right now is Red Butte Cafe up in Foothill.
What is your favorite ASDA event: I really like the cuspid cup. I love competition and competition among classes makes it even more fun
Where can you find me outside of school: Well in the winter you can find me on the ski slope (especially when you get over a 6 week winter break), or walking my dog. I have a German Wirehaired Pointer and he never stops, so we are always out and about
Interesting fact about me: In my undergraduate program I was a member of a folk dance team. What is folk dance? Well it's pretty much doing popular traditional dances from countries all over the world. Because I was involved with this I took up tap dancing and was able to perform for large audiences in 11 different European countries. So I love to dance
What do you see yourself doing in 5 years: Well I want to be practicing dentistry by then. Initially I wanted to do and Oral Surgery residency but I'm starting to shy away from that and thinking of doing a GPR and then joining a practice somewhere. In five years hopefully I'll have started a family and paid back some of my CRAZY student debt.
Favorite dental procedure: I have done a lot outside of restorations and crowns, but we recently completed our RPD section taught by Dr, Ashman. You can tell he is passionate about what he does and although planning an RPD can be a little overwhelming and stressful and found that creating and RPD is like doing a puzzle. You have to make you mind work in a way that most dental procedure don't make it work, and I loved that about that project. However, I'm also a fan of extractions. No matter how crazy they are I love watching them!
What Pandora station do you listen to while studying: Well Spotify is more of my jam, but if I'm studying I love to listen to classical music. Just listening to that stuff pushes me to be more creative, and stimulates my mind. I envy the great classical artists and the pure musical geniuses that they were.
